About this work
A single figure is shown from behind, crouched or reclining on the ground with the torso raised on braced arms and legs folded beneath, hair gathered at the back of the head. The body reads almost entirely as a dark silhouette against a field of tall, vertically streaked grass or reeds in warm gold, ochre, and touches of green.
The pastel is applied in dense, repeated vertical strokes that turn the background into a shimmering curtain of light, while the figure is built from a few broad, smudged dark passes with almost no internal detail. The contrast between the glowing ground and flattened dark form gives the scene a hushed, dreamlike stillness, as if caught in low evening light.
