About this work
A young woman is seated in a full white tutu-like skirt with a purple, off-the-shoulder bodice, her dark hair swept up. She turns her head over one shoulder toward the viewer with a calm, direct gaze, hands resting together in her lap over the folds of the skirt.
The figure is picked out with more defined color and modeling than the surroundings, which dissolve into streaks of grey, lavender and white laid on with a palette knife. Soft diffused light falls across the face and shoulders while the skirt is built from thick, dragged strokes, producing a misty, romantic atmosphere around a clearly focused sitter.
