About this work
Shown mostly in profile, a bearded man with long, tangled brown-grey hair sits wrapped in a simple pale robe, gaze directed away into the distance. One hand rests firmly on a dark ledge or railing at the lower right while the rest of the figure emerges from a plain, undefined brown ground.
Warm ochre and umber dominate the palette, with cooler grey-green touches in the robe and hand. Heavy impasto builds the hair and gripping fingers into raised ridges of paint, and dramatic side lighting sets a subdued, contemplative mood of quiet inward prayer.
