About this work
A woman is shown from the waist up, seated or kneeling, wrapped in a heavy dark mantle that covers her head and shoulders. Her hands are folded together in her lap, and her face is tilted upward and to the side, eyes open in a look of supplication. The pale ochre wall behind her is broadly brushed, and a warm strip of floor anchors the lower edge of the canvas.
The palette is restricted to earthy browns, olive greens, and greys, with the face and clasped hands picked out in warm flesh tones against the dark drapery. Thick, gestural strokes and visible drips of paint build the robe's folds, while the background is scrubbed in loosely to keep attention on the illuminated head and hands. The handling is raw and unpolished, giving the figure a quiet, devotional intensity.
