About this work
A man's head and shoulders emerge from a dark background, his light, tousled hair and full beard rendered with loose, summary strokes. His eyes are cast downward and his expression is quiet, while a pale collared garment is suggested at the shoulders with a few broad marks.
Cream white, ochre and touches of warm red-brown build the face over the deep blue-black ground, applied in thick, economical strokes of brush and knife. Forms are described through broad tonal patches rather than line, giving this small sketch an immediate, contemplative character.
