About this work
A young woman with a blue headband and dangling beaded earrings sits with her arms crossed and hands loosely clasped in front of her. She wears a sleeveless rose-pink top over a dark undergarment, and below her the canvas dissolves into a mass of gold, ochre and brown strokes suggestive of woven straw or nesting material cradling her form.
The upper canvas is worked in soft whites, blues and warm neutrals with heavy impasto, while the lower half turns dense and golden with thick ridges of paint. Light falls gently across her face, softening her features, while surrounding passages stay abstract and unresolved. The contrast between the calm figure and tangled golden ground gives the picture a hushed, cocooned feeling.
