About this work
The view looks across Piazza della Rotonda from beneath the Pantheon's portico, its massive stone columns filling the right side of the composition. Beyond them stretches an open square with an obelisk-topped fountain at its center, ochre and terracotta apartment buildings lining the far side, and small figures scattered across the pavement and gathered near striped awnings.
Warm ochre, terracotta and dusty pink dominate the palette under a pale blue sky, with loose, visible brushstrokes describing shuttered windows and worn stone. Strong midday sun casts crisp shadows beneath the columns, giving the scene a bright, bustling, sun-warmed atmosphere typical of a Roman piazza.
