About this work
A stone-edged canal recedes toward a low red bridge, flanked on the right by a row of ochre and cream buildings with pitched roofs, and on the left by bare autumn trees and a gilded spire. A granite embankment with steps runs along the water's edge, and small boats are moored near the far bank.
Deep blue water is broken into facets of turquoise, violet, and pink under bright sun, painted with loose, overlapping strokes that catch the light. Warm golden light washes the facades on the right while the embankment stones stay in cool shadow, producing a crisp, airy contrast typical of a clear day.
