About this work
The composition looks across the wide expanse of Palace Square toward the Alexander Column and the green-and-white facade of the Winter Palace, with the General Staff building visible at left. Scattered groups of small figures cross the paved square, and a tall black lamppost flying a striped flag rises in the right foreground; autumn leaves are strewn across the stone paving.
