About this work
Weathered ochre and pink buildings with peeling plaster crowd together beneath red tile roofs, their green-shuttered windows catching full sun. A small stone archway leads under one house to a shaded passage, while a wall fountain and a pot of red geraniums occupy the lower left corner; a lone bird perches on a rooftop against the clear sky.
The palette is built from warm terracotta, ochre and pink set against a saturated cobalt sky, applied with thick, palette-knife impasto that gives every wall a rough, sun-baked texture. Strong contrasts of light and shadow model the architecture, and the loaded brushwork creates a lively, sunstruck Mediterranean atmosphere.
