About this work
A towering straw effigy hung with strips of red, orange and blue cloth dominates the upper half of the canvas as it is hoisted upright. Below, a young man in a dark vest tilts his head back and smiles, gripping a pole, while other figures crowd around its base.
Warm ochre and straw-gold dominate the effigy, built up with thick, dragged impasto that mimics dry stalks, while quick dabs of crimson, teal and violet mark the ribbons. Loose, gestural brushwork and a soft grey backdrop set off the festive commotion, giving the scene an exuberant, celebratory charge.
