About this work
A wide city square opens onto a turreted apartment block with pointed gables and dormer windows, its pale stone facade flanked by pink and terracotta buildings receding down the street. A tall lamppost stands at the corner as pedestrians cross the pavement, cars park along the curb, and a cyclist rides past.
Built up in thick, confident strokes of a palette knife, the scene is rendered in warm creams, dusty pinks and terracotta reds under a clear blue sky. Sunlight rakes across the stonework, picking out architectural detail in broken dabs of white and ochre, while the pavement and figures are summarized in loose, energetic touches.
