About this work
Undulating white and pale-blue forms, thickly built up and creased like fabric or plaster, dominate the center of the canvas, flanked by dark brown-black masses at the edges and a warm ochre-gold shape at lower right. No clear figure, furniture or setting is legible; the composition reads as an interplay of folds and craggy dark patches rather than a specific reclining scene.
Executed with heavy, sculptural impasto and scraped textures, the palette stays close to whites, greys and browns, warmed by one passage of ochre. The tactile, encrusted surface and ambiguous forms create an enigmatic mood, closer to abstract relief than to a descriptive figure painting despite the title.
