About this work

Across a band of dark, wind-churned water, the spire and domes of a Petersburg cathedral rise faintly through mist, flanked by low embankment walls and the dark hull of a moored vessel. The city itself all but dissolves into the pale sky, leaving only the tapering spire as a clear point of reference.

Thick, dragged strokes of olive, slate and grey build the restless water, while the sky and distant architecture are rendered in soft, chalky whites and mauves that blur the line between land and cloud. The subdued, almost monochrome palette and rough texture create a damp, blustery November atmosphere over the river.
