About this work
A bare, gnarled tree with a few thin branches rises in the foreground against the dark facade of a building whose windows glow faintly yellow in the night. The scene is tightly cropped, the trunk's silhouette overlapping the wall so that tree and architecture merge into a single dense mass under a deep grey sky.
Worked in pastel on toned grey paper, the composition relies on rough black, indigo and ochre strokes scraped and layered to suggest bark, brick and lit glass without fixed contour. The heavy, smudged darkness and isolated pinpricks of warm window light create a quiet, somber nocturnal mood.
