About this work
A cluster of old wooden buildings with steep, frost-lined roofs stands behind a screen of bare, dark reeds and branches. To the right, a low arched opening, perhaps a gateway or bridge, sits half in shadow, its form doubled by a murky reflection in the still water filling the foreground.
Grey, olive and muted violet tones merge across the surface in dense, dragged brushwork, with only touches of white marking snow on the roofline. The heavy, subdued palette and blurred, decaying forms create a mournful, elegiac mood consistent with the work's title.
