About this work
A pale horizontal band, reading as a lit railing, ledge or upper wall, crosses the middle of the composition, catching the last of the daylight. Below it, dense greenish-black strokes suggest overgrown foliage or a shadowed garden, while a flat grey sky presses down from above.
Thick, dragged strokes of oil in olive, slate and near-black are built up wet-on-wet, with a few red flecks breaking the muted palette at the edges. The heavy impasto and dim, twilight tonality give the scene a hushed, somewhat brooding mood.
