Factory's smokes

Three tall chimneys rise from a low, dark industrial building along the bottom edge of the canvas, its windows glowing faintly with interior light. Above them a single dense cloud of smoke spreads outward and upward, filling most of the picture and dissolving into the surrounding night sky.

The composition rests on a stark contrast between the deep ultramarine sky and the thick, pale ochre-and-grey mass of smoke, applied in heavy, dragged strokes that give it a solid, sculptural weight.
