About this work
A gnarled, leafless tree stands at the left, its branches built up in thick raised ridges of ochre paint; at center a small structure with a rounded roof is modeled in heavy white impasto, flanked on the right by a rough, textured ochre wall; the sky above is nearly black but for a pale grey streak of cloud, and a broad band of white paint crosses the foreground like snow or mist.
The palette is restricted to blacks, ochres, and chalky whites, the surface worked with thick sculptural ridges of paint rather than smooth brushwork, giving the whole scene a rough, encrusted texture; the sparse dark composition and isolated grey cloud lend the image a bleak, still, nocturnal quiet.
