About this work
On a stone terrace edged by a baluster railing, a row of angel statues in flowing draped robes stand facing a vast mushroom-cloud explosion billowing on the horizon. At the right edge a dark-cloaked, winged figure climbs a tall ladder that rises off the platform into the boiling sky, while the smaller robed angels look on from their separate pedestals below.
Dense black ink linework radiates outward from the blast in fanning hatch marks that suggest blinding light against a churning dark sky. The statues' robes are built from bold parallel strokes creating heavy pockets of shadow, and the stark contrast between explosive light and inked darkness gives the etching a somber, apocalyptic weight.
