About this work
A panoramic ridge of high peaks fills most of the composition, their rocky faces streaked with patches of snow in the gullies and hollows. A dark green forested slope descends diagonally across the foreground at the left, while a pale, cloudless sky stretches across the top of the canvas.
Warm ochre, rust, and gray tones catch strong raking sunlight across the ridgelines, set against cool blue shadow in the folds of rock. Confident, fairly smooth brushwork defines the planes of the mountainside, giving the high-altitude view a crisp, serene expansiveness.
