About this work
A chestnut-and-white horse stands turned toward the viewer in a narrow street of pale ochre buildings and an arched gateway. Behind its forequarters the animal's body swells into a huge, smooth, egg- or boulder-like mass that occupies most of the composition, blurring the line between living creature and inert form while the empty cobbled street and open arch continue into the distance.
Soft morning light in pale blue, gold and cream washes over the facades, while the horse and its bulging extension are painted in warm reddish browns with a pale diagonal marking. Flat, simplified shading and smooth transitions give the giant shape a sculptural, almost inflated quality, producing a quietly dreamlike, unsettled atmosphere.
