About this work
In the foreground a red-haired woman in ornate armor and a checkered collar sits with a sword, helmet and lion-crest shield at her feet, one leg extended toward the viewer. Behind her a blonde woman in yellow stands at a table set with oranges, lemons, a blue pitcher, a gramophone and a jug of daisies, with green hills, sea and crescent moon beyond.
Flat, brightly saturated blues, greens, oranges and yellows are applied in smooth, decorative planes with little modeling, echoing folk and icon-like stylization. Objects are stacked and scaled without conventional perspective, creating a dreamlike, symbol-laden tableau whose theatrical costumes and incongruous still life read as a playful riddle rather than a single narrative moment.
