About this work
Two ballerinas in ornate tutus stand pressed close together, their veiled, upswept hair touching as they bend over a small book held between them; one grips a pen, seemingly signing or writing while the other looks on. Their costumes combine pale blue-grey tulle skirts with dark bodices painted with dense clusters of maroon, gold and green flowers, sheer veils falling from their hair over bare shoulders.
Broad, confident strokes and thick impasto pick out the flowers and veil folds, while the faces are softened and more smoothly blended. Cool blue-grey dominates the skirts, set off by warm ochre skin and touches of burgundy and gold. The close, cropped view and even light give the scene an intimate, backstage quietness.
