About this work
The head and shoulders of a young woman fill the canvas, her long hair falling loose past her collarbone and parted off-center. Her face is turned toward the viewer, lit from one side so the cheekbone, nose and brow catch the light while the far side falls into shadow; her greenish eyes hold a calm, direct stare.
Paint is applied thickly, with visible knife and brush marks building the hair and skin in warm ochre, rust and cream against a near-black ground flecked with cobalt blue and red. The strong light-dark contrast and rough, unblended texture give the portrait a raw, immediate presence.
