About this work
A young man's head and shoulders fill the canvas, seen from a low angle so that his chin and throat are prominent and his gaze is directed upward and to the side. His dark hair falls loosely over his forehead, and only the collar of a light shirt is visible at the bottom edge. No setting is shown beyond an open sky behind him.
Warm flesh tones in ochre, rose and umber are built with broad, visible brushstrokes, while the sky is laid in soft strokes of blue, white and pink. The handling is loose and economical, more concerned with capturing light and expression than fine detail. The upward gaze and airy background give the small study a light, searching, contemplative mood.
