About this work
A dancer costumed as the Bluebird stands mid-step on a garden path, arms flung wide beneath towering pale-blue wings tipped with white down. A crested feather headdress crowns dark hair, and a jeweled blue-and-gold tunic with a tasseled skirt covers a slim frame in pale tights. Behind, a manicured park shows a domed pavilion, marble statues, urns and a stone staircase among leafy trees.
Soft greens and dusty pinks of the garden set off the sharp blues of the wings and costume, built up in chalky, matte layers typical of pastel. Facial modeling is delicate, with quick hatching in the foliage and looser strokes in the architecture, giving the scene an airy, theatrical lightness.
