About this work
A young woman in a pale blue and cream gown sits on a rock, attended by a man in green livery behind her. To the left a white marble statue of a reclining figure rests on a pedestal by a stone path; a red-toned hillock and pale draped cloth over rocks fill the right, with a hazy park beyond.
Foliage and hedges are rendered in an intense, unnatural crimson red that dominates the composition, set against the soft blues, greens and creams of the costumes and distant trees. Light is even and diffused, brushwork smooth and blended, and the saturated, decorative color scheme gives the scene a dreamlike, fairy-tale atmosphere rather than a naturalistic one.
