About this work
Two women face each other in profile at either side of the composition, a bald infant propped between them and reaching toward a paper mobile of stars and ribbons hanging overhead. All three figures are wrapped in the same richly patterned, dark blue fabric dotted with small floral and coin-like motifs, their hands raised near the baby's bottle and toy.
A near-monochrome blue palette unifies the figures with the ornamented ground behind them, broken only by warm flesh tones in the faces and hands. Flattened, decorative patterning and soft pastel blending replace naturalistic depth, creating a hushed, tender, almost dreamlike mood around the child.
