About this work
A single figure in a black-and-white checkered bodice and rainbow-striped skirt strolls past a pair of oversized garden urns flanked by a tall wine-red vessel and an old-fashioned coffee grinder. At the base of the scene a white bowl of cherries, a pear, small ceramic jugs, and two cups rest on the ground, closing the composition like a tabletop still life beneath the standing figure.
Deep maroon, ochre, and moss tones dominate a mottled, textured background, against which the flat black-white checks and striped color bands read as bold decorative pattern. Warm, low light and thick, dabbed brushwork give the scene an intimate, dreamlike hush suited to its evening theme.
