About this work
A nude young woman sits half-turned on a white draped stool, one leg crossed over the other in blue high-heeled sandals, a pale wrap sliding from her shoulders. Pink and blue fabric rosettes crown her head; around her stand a vase of apples, oranges and a pear, a stack of books, a teacup, and a bed of irises and roses, all set before richly patterned brocade wallpaper and a swagged violet curtain.
The surface is built from minutely rendered pattern - florals repeating across fabric, wallpaper and floor - set against the smooth, evenly lit flesh tones of the figure. Warm ochre and gold dominate, cooled by the lavender drapery, producing a dreamlike, boudoir-like stillness.
