About this work
Set within an oval vignette, a woman in an elaborate winged or crowned headdress and richly patterned, laced bodice looks sideways with a faint smile, one hand raised to her chin, the other holding a small rose against her chest; a tiny cherub and a distant tower appear in the shadowed drapery beside her.
The etching is worked in fine, dense linework and tinted with warm sepia and cool blue-black washes that wrap around the oval like a glowing halo. Ornamental patterning covers the costume and jewelry in obsessive detail, giving the portrait a dreamlike, storybook quality rather than a naturalistic likeness.
