About this work
Dense trees and undergrowth, edged with rust-orange grasses, crowd the left side of the composition and fall away into a narrow dark reflection in the water. To the right, an open, pale river or lake extends toward a barely visible horizon line, the scene empty of any figures or structures.
Warm rust and umber foliage contrasts with the cool cream and grey of water and sky, the light soft and diffused throughout. Brushwork is fine and detailed in the grasses but broadens into flat washes across the water, producing a quiet, meditative stillness.
