About this work
A mass of leafless trees and reeds, touched with rust-colored foliage, fills the right side of the canvas and drops straight down into its own dark reflection. To the left, a calm river or lake opens out toward an almost invisible horizon, sky and water dissolving into the same pale haze with no other features in view.
The palette is limited to creams, greys and warm russet browns in the foliage, applied with thin, delicate strokes for the twigs and reeds against broad flat passages of fog and water. The overall effect is muted and still, the atmosphere heavy with mist and quiet melancholy.
