About this work
Thick stands of dry, golden-brown reeds and grasses occupy most of the canvas, growing up toward a dark band of trees and shrubs across the top. On the right, the reeds give way to a calm, pale stretch of water that catches faint reflections of the grass and sky, with a thin strip of the same golden growth continuing along the lower right edge.
Warm ochres, rust, and straw-yellow dominate the grasses, set against cooler dark greens and greys in the trees above and the pale water beyond. The paint is applied in short, dry, vertical strokes that mimic individual stalks, dissolving into softer, wetter passages near the water, giving the scene a dense, textured, quietly rustic feel.
