About this work
The dark, olive-brown water of the Fontanka fills the foreground, reflecting an ochre-red townhouse on the left bank. Beyond the stone embankment rises the arched span of Anichkov Bridge with its green railings and a bronze horse-tamer statue at the corner, while pedestrians cross and gulls skim low over the water.
Warm russet and terracotta tones for the buildings play against cool grays and greens in the water and sky, under soft, overcast light. Brushwork is loose and energetic, especially in the choppy reflections, giving the everyday embankment view an immediate, plein-air freshness.
