About this work

Several rusting fishing boats and trawlers, marked with faded numbers, are moored side by side along a low stone breakwater. Masts, antennas and rigging rise above their hulls, and two small figures stand on the pier among the boats. Calm water fills the foreground, with low mountains and a wide sky full of soft clouds and a couple of gulls stretching across the background.

Painted in muted blues, greys and rust tones, the scene is built with loose, visible brushstrokes that keep the hulls and reflections soft-edged rather than sharply defined. Light, high clouds and pale distant hills create an airy, spacious feel, while the battered boats add a note of quiet, workaday melancholy to the tranquil harbor view.
