About this work
A small wooden rowboat, painted green with touches of rust-red along its hull, sits grounded at the edge of water among reeds or grass. Its prow points toward the viewer, and a simple ladder or mooring frame is attached at the stern. The surrounding water and shoreline merge into one another, with no horizon or other objects breaking the scene.
The palette is almost entirely green, from acid yellow-greens in the grass to deep emerald in the shaded water, with the boat's pale gunwale picked out in thick white and grey highlights. Paint is applied with a palette knife in broad, overlapping strokes that blur the boundary between boat, reflection, and shore. The result is a still, quiet composition centered on a single idle vessel.
