About this work
Timber cottages with heavy snow-laden roofs stand grouped together in a rural village, their dark walls contrasting with drifts of snow along the ground. A small figure wearing red moves along a path between the buildings, and bare trees and a fence appear at the left edge of the scene. Patches of golden light break through in the foreground snow.
The palette is dominated by soft greys, whites and warm ochres, applied in thick, broken strokes that build up the texture of snow and weathered wood. Touches of red and blue add small accents of color within the muted winter tonality. Loose, energetic brushwork gives the scene an atmospheric, sketch-like immediacy typical of a plein-air winter study.
