About this work
A wide bend of the Karpovka river curves through the composition, its dark water bordered by a snow-dusted embankment and a row of bare-branched trees. Beyond rises a line of city apartment buildings — one washed in pink, others in pale blue and cream — beneath a smokestack and a flat grey sky. A single pedestrian and a scatter of birds animate the empty foreground bank.
Painted in soft, broken strokes of grey, lilac and ochre with touches of oil pastel for the tree branches and window details, the composition dissolves architectural edges into atmosphere. The muted, damp-cold palette and diffused light give the scene a quiet, subdued winter stillness.
