About this work

A dark, hooded figure with bare feet stands at the left, leaning over a pale form wrapped in a white cloth or felt that lies stretched across the ground. Beside it a small white hare lies motionless on its side. Loose red brushstrokes hover in the upper right like a stain or flare above the otherwise bare, earth-toned setting.

The composition is painted almost entirely in blacks, umbers and greys, with the white cloth and hare left as the brightest, starkest passages against the dark ground. Broad, dry brushwork and heavy shadow give the scene a hushed, funereal weight, the isolated red mark reading as the only note of disturbance.
