About this work
A narrow cobbled alley climbs steeply between two whitewashed buildings, its walls pierced by shuttered and grated windows and a green door. A figure leans out from an open window on the left, and above the rooftops a tiled roof, ceramic wall plaque and lantern lead the eye up to a slice of blue sky and green hillside.
Cool grey-violet shadows fill the passage while warm ochre sunlight strikes the far wall, painted in loose, confident strokes that leave individual brushmarks visible. Strong linear perspective funnels the eye toward the light at the top, giving the narrow street a bright, quiet warmth.
