About this work
A terracotta-pink dome and a pale stone bell tower rise in the middle distance, framed and partly obscured by hanging branches of green foliage that cut across the entire composition. Sections of a light-colored building with round window openings are visible beneath the dome, while a strip of pale blue sky opens above the leaves.
Thick, dragged strokes of green and olive applied with a palette knife stand in sharp contrast to the smoother, warmer ochre and cream tones used for the architecture. Light falls brightly on the dome and tower, while the foreground foliage remains in cooler shadow, creating a sense of looking at a sunlit landmark through a shaded garden.
