About this work
A young ballerina stands half-turned, one hand raised toward her bare shoulder, gazing off to the side as if listening for a cue. She wears a corseted bodice patterned in red, gold, and dark green above a voluminous black tulle skirt scattered with pale flecks; behind her a large mirror reflects her face and torso from another angle, doubling her presence in the shallow, undefined space.
Thick, loaded brushstrokes build the costume in slashes of red and black, while the background dissolves into streaks of violet, grey, and ochre. Light picks out her collarbone, arms, and the sheen of the corset, leaving the surroundings loose and unfinished by comparison. The energetic, painterly handling and the doubled image in the mirror give the picture a restless, theatrical intensity.
