About this work
A red-haired young woman in an orange-red uniform, tagged '1984' on her collar, is set among tightly packed rows of grey-clad men and boys. In the upper rows several faces have been replaced by bare skulls, their eye sockets hollow, while the living faces below stare out blankly with numbered tags of their own.
Charcoal and pastel build the crowd in muted greys and sallow yellow-greens, the skulls barely darker than the living faces around them so that death and the living seem to occupy the same plane. The one figure in warm red stands out starkly against this field, giving the sheet a somber, unsettling mood of anonymity shading into mortality.
