About this work
A mask-like face in green and black, its features barely modeled, sits on an irregular patch of ochre and gold that resembles aged parchment or a fragment of gilded ground. This patch is set within a much larger field of deep blue that surrounds it on three sides, with a small dark shape cropped in the lower right corner.
The paint is worked in thin, stained layers on the gold ground and thicker, scraped strokes in the face, producing a worn, weathered surface akin to old church painting. The contrast between saturated ultramarine and warm ochre-gold gives the image a heavy, iconic presence, while the indistinct features keep the face anonymous and remote. The overall effect is austere and contemplative rather than descriptive.
