About this work
Three horses—one dark grey, one bay, and a smaller dark-coated animal—stand close together in a small forest clearing, their heads lowered and muzzles nearly touching as if greeting or grazing side by side. Their bodies overlap in the frame, with legs partly hidden in undergrowth and a rough stone or trunk visible between them, while dense trees and foliage fill the background.
Foliage behind the horses is built up in thick, textured strokes of dark green, olive and touches of pink and white, contrasting with the smoother, more blended modeling of the animals' coats. Warm ochre light falls across the ground and the horses' flanks, picking out muscle and highlight against the shadowed woodland. The overall feeling is calm and intimate, a quiet moment among animals in the wild.
