About this work
Rows of snow-covered fir trees line both banks of an open, dark stream running through the center of the composition. Their branches, heavy with clumped snow, arch over the water, which reflects the pale, hazy sky and a warm patch of light glowing through the trees at the back. Low snowbanks and scattered slender trunks frame the foreground.
The palette is built from soft blue-grays, whites and lavender, warmed by a touch of golden light at the horizon. Broken, feathery brushwork describes the snow clinging to branches, while smoother strokes render the still water's reflections. The overall effect is hushed and serene, the quiet of an overcast winter afternoon.
