About this work
Slender pine trunks rise in close ranks across the foreground, their green crowns overlapping against a pale sky, while a steep, pale rock face streaked with patches of green scrub fills the middle distance. Low shrubs and grass close off the bottom of the composition, and no sea or shoreline is visible within the frame.
Thick, palette-knife impasto builds the chalky texture of the cliff in whites, greys and lilac-blue shadows, contrasted with looser, drier strokes of yellow-green for the pine needles and undergrowth. The high-key, sunlit palette and simplified masses give the mountainside a solid, tactile presence, producing a calm, airy mood typical of open-air sketching.
