About this work
A horse rears up on its hind legs, front hooves raised and head thrown back, its long mane and forelock swept into loose curling waves. The animal fills the sheet on a bare, unmarked ground, with no rider, harness, or setting to place the scene.
Fine cross-hatched pen lines model the muscles of the chest, shoulder, and haunch, while a warm sandy-beige wash washes over the body and a scatter of black ink spatter marks the ground below. The taut pose and flowing linework give the drawing a sense of sudden, coiled energy.
